About Dr. Mel

As a licensed psychologist and board certified counseling psychologist, I have over a decade of experience in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, clinical supervision, consultation, and developing and providing continuing education workshops for mental health professionals, medical professionals, and educators. In my "day job," I've spent my career in the graduate training of mental health professionals, conducting research, and serving as a leader in professional organizations such as the American Psychological Association and its Divisions.

I am passionate about providing mental health services that are culturally responsive, anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and holistic. I am also passionate about helping other professionals strengthen these approaches for their own clients and students. You can learn more about my clinical approach and expertise in psychotherapy and assessment; my continuing education and consulting offerings; and my research throughout this website.

I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology (2015) from the University at Albany, State University of New York. Prior to that, I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology (with minors in Health and Wellness and Religious Studies [World Religions]) from Cedar Crest College, and an Associate's Degree in Psychology from Lehigh Carbon Community College. As a first-generation college graduate from a lower socioeconomic status background as well as a person with disabilities, I understand how difficult it is to navigate systemic and structural barriers.

My career as a professor has taken me around the Eastern seaboard, Deep South, and the Midwest; I'm now based back in Upstate New York, but my work remains multi-state.

When I am not working, I love to be outdoors (beach or mountains; paddle boarding); see a concert or comedy show; watch a good show or listening to a good book or podcast; travel; spend time with loved ones; and/or bake. I have a reputation for my cupcakes, cakes, cheesecakes, and banana bread. I also have two cats and two dogs who I love to dote on, and most of whom love to make the occasional appearance on Zoom.
